Toms and Garrigus withdraw from John Deere

David Toms and Robert Garrigus have withdrawn during the first rounds of the John Deere Golf Classic because of injuries.

Toms played nine holes before leaving the course. He has been suffering with a hip problem and has now confirmed that he will be forced to pull out of next week’s Open Golf Championship

Toms who has been having a successful season so far; he won the Colonial in May and was runner-up at the Players said

"I've got a bad hip right now and just to walk around this golf course is quite a feat."

His place will now be taken by England’s Simon Dyson. Dyson was in a position to qualify a few weeks ago from a mini- money list, but was knocked out by Pablo Larrazabal and Sergio Garcia when they finished first and second in the BMW International Open in Germany.

Garrigus left the golf course after playing just eight holes, and now his start at the Open looks in jeopardy. He had only just been added to the list of players this week after Frenchman Thomas Levet had to pull out of the Open due to a broken shin, an injury he suffered when he jumped into a lake to celebrate his victory at the French Open.

Thomas Bjorn is the now first reserve.
