Harrington accepts Ryder Cup snub

Three time major winner Padraig Harrington was omitted from Jose Maria Olazabal's Ryder Cup squad in favour of Nicolas Colsaerts, a Belgian who has never before played at the biennial tournament and has just two event wins at the top level of the game.

While it may have rankled, Harrington said he was unsurprised by the decision.

"The dogs in the street knew I wasn’t getting a pick, so it wasn’t a hard phone call whatsoever," Harrington said. “It was a polite phone call from José. I knew the result. Obviously it wasn’t news to me. I was quite comfortable with his two picks. I think they’ll do very well."

Olazabal's poor relationship with the 40-year-old Irishman has been well-documented by the press leading up to Monday's decision, and the Spaniard said calling Harrington was the hardest call he had to make. But he wasn't prepared to pull any punches.

“I felt I had to make the phone call to Padraig more than anyone else,” said Olazabal.“Padraig is a very good player, but you could also say that about the likes of Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, other former Ryder Cup players.

"The fact is that he [Harrington] didn’t perform well enough. He’s a great champion, but Thomas [Bjorn] was also ahead of him on the list.”
