Quinney, Gainey share lead at Wyndham

American golfers Jeff Quinney and Tom Gainey both shot 7-under 63s to share the lead after one round in the Wyndham Championship on Thursday.

Quinney, 32, was out in front for much of the day after hitting five consecutive birdies from the 12th onwards finishing with a total of eight of them for the round.

Gainey caught up to him during the afternoon. The South Carolina native hitting five birdies and an eagle in a career-best equalling score.

The final PGA Tour event before The Barclays, the heat is on at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

And Quinney, who is in 215th place in the FedEx Cup standings, knows he needs the points to qualify.

"The only chance I get in the playoffs is probably winning this week and coming with the attitude of ... basically just push all your chips in and this is what I got," Quinney told the PGA's official web site.

"It's my last chance."

A shared sentiment in Greensboro.

For several golfers, The Wyndham is the last chance saloon to crack the top 125 on the points list and get into the postseason, which starts next week in New Jersey.

South African Ernie Els, England’s Paul Casey and Irishman Padraig Harrington gave their chances of inclusions a boost with rounds of 65 and 69 respectively.

"I said to the guys, 'My playoffs started this week. If I don't play well this week, I'm not advancing,'" Els said.

"Most of the other guys have four playoff events. I have five. I feel like I need to do well (to go to) The Barclays and keep going. It's hard not to think about it. There's quite a bit of pressure on us guys lower down the field. We need to perform well."

Perform well, and go all-in on the course to get a chance at the $8,000,000 prize fund on offer at the Plainfield Country Club.

"I've got nothing to lose this week," Casey told the PGA's official web site. "I believe I got to be top four to seal a place for next week."
