U.S Ladies win Curtis Cup for Amateurs

The United States have beaten Great Britain and Ireland 12.5 points to 7.5 on Sunday, to win the Women’s Curtis Cup for Amateurs

The 36th biennial golf competition between teams of Amateur female golfers was held at the Essex County course in Manchester-by-the –Sea, Mass. It is a 6,500 yard links style golf course designed by Scotsman Donald Ross.

The visitors finished the first day one point ahead of the U.S team, but after winning all six fourball and foursome matches on Saturday, the Americans earnt themselves a five point lead over the visitors going into the final day. They needed only 2 points in their single matches to retain the cup.

"It was a wonderful victory, obviously. We are very pleased and proud," said U.S. captain Noreen Mohler. "I think today's play was just a continuation of yesterday's play. We went out with momentum and we just made a couple of more putts than they.

The matches on Sunday were the final amateur golfing appearances for some of the ladies on the US team. Alexis Thompson and Jennifer Song, the current U.S Women’s Amateur and Women’s Amateur Public Links champion are expected to play in next week’s PLGA Classic in Galloway.
