Couples returns to golf at Seniors Players

Fred Couples has returned to the Champions Tour after six weeks out with a back injury, and likes his chances for today’s Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship at the historic Westchester Country Club West Course.

Couples said on the eve of the fifth and final Champions Tour major championship of 2011 that Westchester is "one of my favorite tour stops.”

"I never won here but played well a lot of times," Couple said.

The Senior Players event will be only Couples sixth Tour event this year, and the third in the last four months since the Regions Tradition in early May.

Dogged by back problems, he flew to Dusseldorf, Germany for alternative medical treatment.

Couples said that after six treatments of Orthokine treatment under the supervision of Dr. Peter Wehling which “involves blood work and some stuff doctors don’t do in America”, he said he was still suffering stiffness but the pain was completely gone and he was raring to get back onto the course.

"I think I can play four rounds. I'm driving the ball okay," Couples said. "I'm chipping away at the rust."

His own game isn’t the only thing on his mind though.

With the Presidents Cup due in November and the form of Tiger Woods ever decreasing, most recently failing to make the cut at last weekend’s PGA Championship in Georgia, Couples has to decide whom his two wild card selections in September will be:

"I don't believe in my heart that Tiger was ready to play at the PGA," Couples said. "He still hates to lose. He just needs to play more. I want to figure out a way to get him on this team."
