Stricker wins John Deere for a third time

Steve Stricker has won the John Deere Classic for the third year running after sinking a 25 foot putt on the final hole.

It makes him the only US golfer other than Tiger Woods to win a PGA Tour event three times in row in 30 years.

Stricker went into the final day with a two shot lead, and by the turn was five shots ahead of his nearest challenger, Brendon de Jonge. The last nine saw him losing his lead to rookie Kyle Stanley, who was leading by two shots going into the final two holes. Two birdies saw Stricker regain his lead by one shot after Stanley missed out on a play-off when he missed a 10 foot putt on the last hole.

"I still can't believe I made three," Stricker said

"It was a tough day. It was a struggle all the way round and just trying to win is hard. But it's been a lot of fun."

Stanley’s second place earns him one of the two last qualifying places in this week’s Open Championship at Royal St.Georges.

"It's great. I'm very excited to go over there and play. But I'm still trying to calm down from that round."

The other qualifying place went to Scotland’s Scot Jamieson, who finished joint third in this weekend’s Scottish Open.
