Dustin Johnson wins Barclays

Dustin Johnson took his first step to U$10 Million by winning the Barclays, the PGA Tour’s first playoff event of the season, at Plainfield Country Club’s rain-soaked course on Saturday.

Shooting a six-under 65 to clinch a two-stroke victory over Matt Kuchar, Johnson won the shortened 54-hole tournament, making only one bogey over his final 45 holes and finishing on 194.

It would have all been so different if the rain had come sooner.

Had the torrential downpour, a by-product of Hurricane Irene, arrived earlier on Saturday and keep the third round from finishing, the Barclays would have reverted to a 36-hole tournament with Kuchar being named the winner.

"The way I got started, I was hoping that we were going to keep on playing," Johnson said. "We got lucky; the weather held up for us long enough."

An imposing start to his final round set the tone for Johnson’s game.

Opening with back-to-back birdies, he then holed an 85-foot shot to eagle on No 4 to take the lead, cleaning up the front nine with a 29.

A clear advantage was confirmed when Kuchar, who won the Barclays a year ago, made consecutive bogeys on the back nine.

"I had the two basic three-putts and for me, that seems just very uncharacteristic," Kuchar said. "I felt like I was just giving shots away."

Having gone nearly a year since his last win, Johnson was rewarded with a check for $1.44 million as well as moving up to number one in the FedEx Cup leaderboard.

Others who assured themselves of upward movement in the rankings were Ian Poulter, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els.

They and five other players moved inside the top 100 in the standings to advance to the second playoff event outside Boston.

"You're trying to survive. It's desperation," Els said. "It's sadistic. In a way it's fun, if you're into that (stuff)."

Three tournaments remain in the race for the $10 million prize; the next, the Deutsche Bank Championship, begins Friday.
