Year Of The Unknown Feature

2014 is the Year of  ... wait, Who?

The 2014 part of the current golf season has put its first three months in the books and it’s clearly been the year of ... uh, hmmm, the Unknown?
Big-name winners have been in short supply since the 2014 part of the campaign began in Maui on January 3.

Jimmy Walker, who most casual fans identified more for the actor from “Good Times”than a golfer has two wins this year, and Australia’s Adam Scott won the highly-touted Accenture Match Play Championship, but other than that, the big names seem to be either getting hurt, getting healthy or the always ubiquitous “working on their games”.

That’s led to the emergence of first-time tour winners like Kevin Stadler, Patrick Reed, Russell Henley, Chesson Hadley, Matt Every and Steven Bowditch.

Fresh blood is never a bad thing, but golf, particularly in the Tiger Woods era, has been popular because of its stars.

It’s always great when an unknown challenges a big player like Woods, Phil Mickelson or Ernie Els in a big tournament; but ratings and interest tend to wane when every week the household names are sitting out, withdrawing or missing cuts while the young guys make hay.

Some of that ambivalence comes from having to wait until the fourth month of the year for the first Major, which kicks off in two weeks in Augusta.

With just four Majors a year, whomever wins The Masters instantly becomes an elite player, or further cements their legacy as one, setting the tone for the rest of the year.
