DA Points clinches Houston Open

D.A. Points won the Houston Open with a one stroke win on Sunday and with it secured a spot at The Masters, a two-year Tour exemption and a sizeable winners cheque.

Not too shabby for a 14-year Tour veteran with only one event title under his belt before the weekend.

"I never doubt that I can do it," Points said. "I certainly get down and frustrated when I make two of nine cuts. That's not making you feel real great about yourself."

"I never thought that I wasn't going to make it (to Augusta)," he added. "I just thought this is an opportunity."

He's can-do attitude saw him on the 18th with a 13-footer to win after 72 holes of golf, and Points then pulled out the club that had been his ace in the hole all weekend: an old putter belonging to his mother, that has been sitting in the garage for the last 8 years.

It didn't let him down.

"I think mom is just fine with me having it," he said.

"It's been a really tough year, a tough start," said Points, who prior to Houston had just one PGA Tour title from a 14-year career to his name. "To have a putt to win - you want that starting out every week.

"I would have liked it to be a little closer, but I've been putting really well."
