Tiger Woods sacks caddie

The 14-time major champion Tiger Woods has fired his long-time caddie Steve Williams.

Woods announced today that he no longer required the services of the man who stood by his side for 13 of those major titles  – a record-setting player-caddie partnership.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help but I think it's time for a change," the former world No1 said on his website. "Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.”

In their time together, Woods became known as one of the greatest players in golfing history while Williams became known as one of the game’s greatest enemies of photography.

In 2002 he threw a press man’s camera into a pond and at the 2004 U.S. Open he kicked the lens of a New York Daily News photographer and confiscated the camera of a fan.

In the fall-out of his extra-marital affairs, Woods he has lost major sponsors, changed swing coaches, parted ways with the mother of two children and now cut loose his bagman who has been with him for the majority of his 14-year career on the PGA Tour.

“After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock," Williams said on his own website. "Given the circumstances of the past 18 months, I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time."

Williams has recently been working with Australian Adam Scott while Woods rested his injured left leg, sitting out the U.S. Open and British Open. Williams stated he will now caddy for Scott on a permanent basis.
