Norman presses for change at next Prez Cup

Greg Norman has responded to a second straight defeat as Presidents Cup captain by insisting there needs to be rule changes in future iterations of the biannual tournament to even the somewhat one-sided nature of recent results.

Having won the event only once (1998) since its inception in 1994, Norman has proposed that the number of captain’s picks should rise to four for the International team.

In addition he suggests that the host nation should have the option to vary the foursomes and four-ball programs when the Cup is played outside the United States.

The American team dominated the foursomes at Royal Melbourne taking 8 out of 11 points in their 19-15 win.

However, Norman is quick to insist that his calls for rule changes are not about being a bad loser, stating that he raised the issues of captain’s picks with PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem after the 2009 competition.

"I make a very valid case for it, too,” he said. “The basis of golfers where the International team comes from outside of Europe is about 300 million strong population-wise. So the captain has a much more diverse cross-section of a base of golfers to go to.
"And we don't get to play week-in, week-out like the Americans do with the Americans all the time. So for the future captains, we need to have the opportunity as International captain to balance out our players.”

Despite reiterating that he is unlikely to be one of those future captains, Norman also felt that there should be an option to start with the fourballs round.

"We do get our cage rattled a bit in the foursomes matches,” he said. “What's wrong with the host nation having choice of the format, anyway? It would add to the flavor of the event.”

Norman wasn’t the only one who felt the International team should start with the fourballs, South African Ernie Els was brutally frank about the rest of the world’s attempts at the fourball programme:

"We're so bad at it, and every year we start the Presidents Cup with foursomes,” Els said. “If we have a home-field advantage, why don't we start with something different?”
