Leishman takes Travelers for maiden title

Australian Marc Leishman blitzed the field at the Travelers Championship with a birdie-laden 8-under 62 for his maiden PGA Tour title on Sunday.

Despite being six strokes behind the leaders, the 28-year-old Leishman chalked up eight birdies and no birdies to finish at 14-under 266, ahead of Masters champion Bubba Watson and Charley Hoffman, who blew a two-stroke lead.

"It's an incredible feeling, I didn't think I would be in this position when I started this morning," Leishman said.

"This isn't the way I thought I would pick up my first win, but I'm not complaining. I'll take a win any way I can get it."

The course at River Highlands has been particularly fruitful for hunting ground for first time winners. Leisham is now the fifth player in seven years to earn his maiden PGA Tour victory. Fredrik Jacobson did so last time out, Watson in 2010, Hunter Mahan in 2007 and J.J. Henry in 2006.

It was also particularly rewarding for Memorial runner-up Rory Sabbatini, who won himself a gold rolex after shooting a 161-foot hole-in-one on the 16th - his first ace of his tour career.

''It felt really good coming off the club,'' he said. ''It was just a question of having the right yardage. I kind of joked in the middle of the ball flight, and I said, `Be the right one and go in the hole.'''
