Luke Donald doubles up and makes history

World No1 Luke Donald has become the first man to win golf's money lists on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season.

PGA money title winner was still out on the course at the World Championship in Dubai when US Open champion Rory McIlroy, his only remaining challenger on the European circuit, failed to achieve the win he needed to keep the race alive.

Even then, Donald was odds-on to add the title to his American crown. He birdied the last three holes for a second successive 66 and took third place in the tournament, one behind Scot Paul Lawrie and three behind Spain's Alvaro Quiros, who eagled the 18th for a notable double of his own after taking the Dubai Desert Classic in February.

Donald kept his cool until he he was asked by an interviewer what his father, who passed away recently, would have thought of his achievement. "He would have been very proud and he would just give me a big hug," Donald said.

"My father hopped into my head quite a few times [over the closing stretch]. I didn't really look at a leaderboard until the 13th, but didn't see Rory's name and so knew it was mine."
