Splash! Garcia flinges club into lake in Thailand

Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia made a splash at the Thailand Golf Championship on Thursday — hurling his club into a lake on the course after striking a wayward tee-shot.

The Ryder Cup star, who twice finished second at the PGA Championship, chucked his 4-iron into the water in fury after a poor connection at the par-3, eighth hole during a nightmare opening round in Chonburi, Sky Sports reported.

Garcia's day failed to improve as he finished with a 4-over 76 to end tied for 100th in the 130-strong field.

It left him 16 shots back of the runaway leader, England's Lee Westwood, who carded a career-best 60 at the par 72 Amata Spring Country Club to equal the lowest round ever recorded on the Asian Tour.

American John Daly posted the second best score of the day, opening with a 7-under 65, three clear of the chasing pack. Of course, Daly is a man who knows all about taking the plunge, tossing one of his clubs into a pond during the Austrian Open in August.

At the Qatar Masters earlier this year, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson flipped a club into a greenside lake after mishitting a short chip shot.
