The unofficial golf “Mecca” of North America

The mountain surrounded area affectionately called Palm Springs is the place to play some golf. Currently there are 136 golf courses with several to open in 2009 & 2010, bringing the total near 150 golf courses in the Coachella Valley. Keep in mind that the area is approximately 40 miles long and 15 miles wide… that’s a lot of golf.

The golf industry is big business for the Palm Springs area as well as the other high profile resort communities: Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, Indian Wells, and La Quinta. Considering that the Coachella Valley’s year round population averages around 280,000 until winter and spring. Then the part-time residents’ return bringing the population up to 400,000 person range. This of course doesn’t account for the total number of visitors and weekend golfers to Colorado-Sonora Desert.

The city of Indio, to the east end of the valley, has the largest population and one of the nation’s top rated lighted golf courses. It is an executive golf course allowing for a simple yet enjoyable game of golf under the lights (Indio Municipal Course.) Indio was the first city to incorporate in this valley starting back in the recent year of 1930, and golf has grown with the valley.

Coachella Valley is known worldwide in the golfing communities for its many PGA’s golf tour stops here in the winter and springs months. October: the Samsung World Championship at Big Horn golf club, November: the Skins Game, the Playboy Golf Scramble Weekend, January: Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, February: the Frank Sinatra’s event, and March/April the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills to name a few.

All these great golf courses and golf events are around two hours from Los Angeles or San Diego which makes it a great weekend or overnight trip. Not to mention all the great deals on golf gear at Golf Outlets of America; plus all the amazing hotels, resorts, upscale shopping and restaurants to keep one well kept while in town.

So, pick a weekend in the Coachella Valley and a direction and see which golf course you can hit… they are all within a short “drive.”
