Matt Kuchar triumphs at Memorial Tournament

Matt Kuchar won the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club by two shots over compatriot Kevin Chappell on Sunday.

The 34-year-old PGA veteran nailed a birdie putt from 20 feet on the 18thl hole for a 4-under 68, the icing on the cake of a solid final round. Kuchar is now the only player not named Tiger Woods with more than one PGA Tour win this year, adding it to the Match Play Championship title he secured in February.

As well as the win, and a sizeable winner's cheque, Kuchar jumps up to World No4 - a career best - and got the personal plaudits of tournament host Jack Nicklaus.

“This is such an amazing feeling. This never gets old,” said Kuchar, who won for the sixth time in his career. “To have Jack Nicklaus congratulate me is a real treat. This is as special as it gets.”

Traditionally a stacked roster, many of the biggest names didn't even get into contention. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods was left in Kuchar's dust, finishing at six over and eight over respectively, and never threatened to challenge.

Instead, Chappell was the biggest name to run the winner closest. The 26-year-old Californian birdied four of the last six hole to match Kuchar's final round score and earnt himself second place outright.

“There at the end, it got scary,” Kuchar acknowledged. “He made a great run at the end.”
