How to Choose Golf Woods

The fairway wood is a vital piece to any golfers bag and game, so therefore it makes sense to really think about what you’re buying  to ensure you buy the right one to suit you. A lot of the time though it’s hard to know where to start when looking for a club. Here are a few hints and bits of information to help you to make the decision.

Loft
Loft is the description given to the angle at which the club face slants on the club. The higher the loft then the more height you will be able to gain when striking the ball.

Club Head
There are a few simple things to remember when purchasing  a new club. The smaller the head of the club then the easier it will be to control, but obviously the sweet spot will be smaller. Club heads can either be made from steel or titanium, both have very unique properties which can affect your game.

Steel Heads
The steel heads will make the club feel heavier, giving you slightly more control but due to the weight of the head the swing becomes less forgiving so they are more for the more experienced players.

Titanium Heads
Clubs with titanium heads are very expensive, thus why many people opt for the steel heads. As the titanium is very light though it means that the club is lighter to swing offering more flexibility and allowing more power, it allows more forgiveness on the swing too. At the same time though it will offer less control to the player.  It also allows the head to be larger as the material is lighter, this can mean a larger sweet spot which again adds to the forgiveness in the swing.

A general rule is that the higher the angle of loft on the club then the more control you will have, but less ball distance and it is the same vice versa. If you have a slow swing speed then you will need a loft of about 10 – 12 degrees, with faster and lighter clubs you should be looking to get a loft of about 8 – 10 degrees.

Swing Speed
Purchasing a lighter club is advised if you need a faster swing, this will give you added power and a longer ball distance. For golfers that are stronger and have a fast swing, they will choose the heavier swing to counteract their swing speed and give them the added control they need.

Length
There are three different lengths available when purchasing a fairway wood: Traditional (43-44 inches), Mid length (45-46 inches) and long (more than 46 inches), the rule is usually that the sorter the club then the more control you will have with it.

Hopefully this information will aid you in your fairway wood choice and you enjoy your golf games even more!
