Buying a Wedge – A Complete Guide

These days it seems that most golfers tend to carry at least three wedges in their bags. Some of the pro’s tend to carry as many as four wedges to tackle any of the more difficult shots and cope with any situation on the fairway, in a bunker or even on the green. Wedges have become invaluable to golfers on the course.

So What Wedges Can You Get?

Wedge Type

Angle/Loft

Description

Pitching Wedge 46-59 degrees Longest wedge in terms of distance. Used 100-125 yards from pin
Gap Wedge 50-54 degrees Fills gap between pitching wedge and sand wedge
Sand Wedge 55-59 degrees Used for bunkers and perfect for 90 yards from the pin
Lob Wedge ro60-64 degrees Higher short shots that will stop quicker on the green

How Do You Choose A Wedge Then?
When choosing a wedge it is always best to choose one where the shaft matches the shafts or your other clubs in your bag. This way you won’t have to keep adjusting your swings when you pick up a different club. Just remember though that most wedges come with steel shafts, this is so they can offer the support for the heavier heads so players have more control. Also have a think about which conditions you play the most in when thinking about which wedge you should buy. The table above gives a rough guide as to what each wedge is used for.

Does it Matter What Type of Wedge Head you Have?
Wedge heads can come in 5 different materials: gunmetal, steel, chrome, copper and sometimes nickel which is the softest metal.

The softer the face of the club then the more feel you will get when using it, you will also find that you get more spin with the softer metals. The drawback is that the grooves on the face will wear down faster.

What is Bounce?
Bounce is an added construction on the sole plate of the club. The sole of the club will hit the ground before the front face of the club. Zero bounce means the bottom of the club is level and will stick into the ground when swung, this can be useful for those situations when you are in thin grass or have tight lines. Bounce on a club enables you to play in long grass or from a bunker, the bottom of the club will skim the ground and stop the club getting tangled in the grass allowing you to strike the ball correctly.
