Choosing the Perfect Driver

Teeing off has got to be one of the most important aspects of the game. Getting the hole off to a good start can do wonders for your confidence and ensure your remain positive for the entire round. It is always nice to get that perfect first hit, which is why it is so important to choose the right driver. This article will offer a few simple ruling on how to choose your driver in order for you to optimise your playing power.

The Weight of the Club
The lighter the club the faster you should be able to swing it, the heavier the club, the more control is offered to you. If you don’t have a strong swing it would be wise for you to go with a lighter club.

The Length
Players will find that a traditional driver will measure 43–44 inches, this is what most players should find they should go for. Then you have the mid length drivers at 45-46 inches and then long drivers at over 46 inches. The longer drivers will give you those longer tee shots but will offer you less control with your swing.

The Club Heads
There are three different sized club heads, each of them will have their own unique good points, you have standard, midsize and oversize. The standard club head for a driver offers a small sweet spot but counteracts that with more control. This is good for slightly more experienced players. The larger the head then the bigger the sweet spot and the more forgiveness a player will get with their swing.

The Shaft
Players can choose from either a steel shaft or a graphite shaft. A steel shaft will be heavier which will offer more control over the swing. Graphite shafts will be lighter and more expensive, but they will allow for a faster swing. When choosing your club you should try and stick to the same material as the rest of your golf clubs. This way you won’t have to keep adjusting your swing and style when you change clubs.

The Flex
Depending on what your shaft is made from will depend on the flex of the club. A steel shaft will be less flexible, the more flexible the shaft then the more forgiveness it will offer. This will allow the player more chance of rescuing a shot when performing an off centre hit. Graphite shafts are lighter therefore they will offer more flex.

The Grip
The grip of the club will make a lot of difference. If the grip is too big it will alter the swing quite sufficiently. Check the grips on your other clubs to ensure that they match up so that you are not constantly altering your swing and grip for each club you pick up.

The Loft
The loft is important on to look at as this all depends on the type of ball flight which you want. Most people want a penetrating ball flight that can give huge amounts of distance. Some prefer a high ball flight which can overcome obstacles and leave room for accuracy. Most people prefer a penetrating ball flight to ensure they have roll on the ball to give more distance. Lofts start from 9 degrees and go up to about 13 degrees. The best way to test what loft you do need is trial and error.
