Meet the prospective Captains for the Ryder Cup 2008.
The 37 th Ryder Cup will be held in the USA at the prestigious Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville Kentucky in 2008. The dates are set for 19 th 21 st September and it will be a gripping event as we watch the US try hard to win back the prized trophy now that they are swinging their clubs back on home soil.
Team Europe Captain: Nick Faldo
Nick Faldo has been chosen to captain the European team at the Ryder Cup in 2008. Nick is a British golf champion who turned professional in 1976 and is one of Europe 's most successful golfers, winning over 42 titles.
Nick took up golf after being inspired by Jack Nicklaus competing in the 1971 US masters. After borrowing a set of golf clubs off his neighbours, Nick joined his local golf club and within four years became the best amateur golf player in Europe , winning the English Amateur Championship and the British Youth Championships in 1975. He took up playing golf professionally in 1977.
After leaving his amateur golf club, Nick first played in the Ryder Cup in 1977 and was the youngest player to have swung his golf club in the famous tournament. He has represented Europe 11 times and holds the record for the number of points and matches won in the Ryder Cup competition.
Nick will be a non-playing captain for the Ryder Cup European team and he will be hoping to lead the team to a 4 th victory in a row.
Team USA Captain: Paul Azinger
On November 6 th 2006, it was announced that Paul Azinger was going to captain the USA for the 37th Ryder Cup. Having represented the US 4 times in the Ryder Cup, Azinger has a 5-7-3 record having never allowed his golf clubs to be beaten in a singles match.
Azinger left his amateur golf club and turned to professional golf in 1981 at the age of 21. Coincidentally, hiis career has run parallel to Nick Faldo and throughout their career's, Azinger and Nick have played against one another in 4 Ryder Cup matches where the results have been 2 wins and 2 draws.
Azinger is the 25th Ryder Cup Captain and the 15th PGA champion to Captain a team in the Ryder Cup. He has won 14 worldwide professional championships since turning professional. So, with Azinger at the helm in 2008, the USA will certainly be hoping for their first Ryder Cup win since 1999.
