Golf Clubs – The Ryder Cup – Paul Azinger Steps Up
Golf Clubs The Ryder Cup Paul Azinger Steps Up
Will Paul Azinger as the new Captain for the 2008 Ryder Cup inspire his team's golf clubs to victory?
Paul Azinger
When Europe became the first team to win all five sets of matches to win the Ryder Cup for the third time in a row, it was clear that we needed to do something radical with their golf clubs.
And for the 2008 Ryder Cup, which will be hosted at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville , the new US Captain Paul Azinger has revamped the rules. But after such a succession of defeats at The Ryder Cup, perhaps it is time we took the risk.
Money and prestige
Azinger has 20 years experience on the PGA Tours, and has overcome cancer during his time. He is perhaps, an inspirational and focused leader believing the only thing that makes him nervous is when money or prestige is at stake. Which is why, he put his golf clubs where his mouth is and changed the point system for golfers to qualify for the Ryder Cup, ensuring money and majors are the determining factors.
The PGA states that America 's New Qualifying Criteria will include:
- Every $1000 earned in 2007 majors = 1 point.
- Every $1,000 earned in official events in 2008 = 1 point.
- Every $1,000 earned in 2008 majors = 2 points.
I just felt like it was time for money to be the barometer, Azinger told the press.
Awe-struck
Azinger was said to be awe-struck when he got the job to Captain the 2008 Ryder Cup and the pressure is on to turn the losing tide and make the most of the individual talent in the States which after all boasts the world's greatest man with a set of golf clubs Tiger Woods.
Nick Faldo
Tom Lehman was the previous Captain for the 2006 Ryder Cup held at the K Golf Club in Ireland . And Azinger will be pitted against the English Captain, Nick Faldo not for the first time. The two men have battled things out with their golf clubs four times before at the Ryder Cup.
Rivalry
Although Europe has consistently beaten America in the Ryder Cup, the US will be hoping Azinger will turn the luck of their golf clubs around in 2008. The fact that he has beaten Nick Faldo twice and had two draws in the four Ryder Cup matches they have competed in might put some much needed fire behind our American's golf clubs.
