Golf Clubs – Ryder Cup Europe Storm the Game
Golf Clubs Ryder Cup Europe Storm the Game
The 2006 Ryder Cup saw the Europeans storm the game from the very first swing of their golf clubs.
Ryder Cup Victory
We may have the world's number one player, Tiger Woods, but even the man with the golden golf clubs couldn't help our team claw their way to victory at the 2006 Ryder Cup.
It was clear as soon as Europe first unpacked their golf clubs that they would dominate the USA over the three-day tournament.
The quality of European golf was evident in both the team work and individual play, and the victory was the third in a row for the Europeans. Many felt that the European's golf clubs would suffer on a course designed by an American but they stormed to victory to win the Ryder Cup at the K Club.
Emotional Tour de Force
Under the leadership of Captain Ian Woosman, the European team put some emotional charge into their golf clubs from the outset when Colin Montgomerie tested the nerves of everyone with a birdie from a bunker at the 18 th .
The tournament had an extra emotional charge because of Irishman Darren Clarke, who received a warm reception from the massive crowds. His wife Heather had recently died of cancer. When Clarke helped the team to victory for the Ryder Cup, he dropped his golf clubs and broke down in tears as he was hugged by fellow players.
Victory
The victory was even more apt for the Irishman as the Ryder Cup was hosted in his home country this year.
American player DiMarco gave a brave stand with his golf clubs; the Italian-American refused to give up the Ryder Cup but eventually conceded to the Englishman, Westwood.
The European team celebrated with champagne from the balcony of the Palmer Course clubhouse, but perhaps the most enduring image from the Ryder Cup 2006 was the moment Clarke's arm was lifted in the air in victory particularly poignant as he kept up the fight with his golf clubs even though his wife had lost hers.
Triumph
Europe eased their golf clubs to victory at the 36 th Ryder Cup with an 18 and a half 9 and a half win.
We've made this the greatest week in history, Captain Ian Woosnam told the press. It's very emotional. I just can't say enough about my team, they have played absolutely fantastic, said Woosnam.
