A moving dedication was made at the 2006 Ryder Cup as Europe swung their golf clubs to victory.

The 2006 Ryder Cup European team victory showed an awesome display with their golf clubs, but the real emotional punch of the tournament had a more personal touch.

Europe 's Captain Ian Woosnam dedicated the Ryder Cup victory to his fellow golfer Darren Clarke's late wife, Heather.

Heather Clarke died on August 13, just weeks before the tournament, of breast cancer. Despite this, Darren took his golf clubs to the competition with determination and kept his focus, helping his team achieve the Ryder Cup victory.

�Every single one of us has dedicated this to Heather, and Darren,� said Ian Woosnam in tribute to Heather who died at the age of 39.

Darren's play at the Ryder Cup echoed other high profile golfers who refused to put down their golf clubs in the face of tragic bereavement. Tiger Woods played at the US Open despite loosing his father � his mentor and inspiration, and in the same tournament Italian-American Chris DiMarco felt his mother was looking down on him as he played just weeks after she passed away.

Despite maintaining their focus throughout the game � Woods and DiMarco both broke down once the tournament was over. Similarly, Darren Clarke wept when he put down his golf clubs and the 2006 Ryder Cup was theirs. The Ryder Cup win has gone down in history not just for being a spectacular performance by the Europeans with their golden golf clubs - but for being a story on the human spirit.

Emotional response

As Clarke completed his victory over Zach Johnson on the Sunday afternoon, thousands of Irish fans watched Darren being hugged by his team mates and Captain in a moment of pure emotion. Wining the Ryder Cup showed an enormous test of character when Clarke picked up his golf clubs to play � just three week's after his wife's passing.

�The support I have received this week has been unbelievable,� Clarke told the press. �From our Team, the US Team and their wives, it has been incredible and the support that I got from the crowds from the first day until now is something that I will cherish forever. This has done a lot for me � it has shown me how much they care about me and how much they cared about Heather, and that means everything to me.�
