Golf Clubs � Ryder Cup Media Outrage

Tiger Woods hadn't even unpacked his golf clubs when media controversy hit the 2006 Ryder Cup.

An Irish magazine, The Dubliner, was in the bad books of the man with the golden golf clubs, Tiger Woods, and slurred the 2006 Ryder Cup. The magazine published fake pornographic photos of his wife. A UK tabloid and the internet also published the pictures.

Ryder Cup

Tiger Woods is the world's number one champion and there were concerns that the negative publicity might have had an affect on his ability with his golf clubs during the Ryder Cup tournament. However, although the American team lost to Europe , many critics felt that Woods played some of his best golf at the event.

Swimwear model

His wife Elin Nordegren is a former bikini model and she was clearly upset and said she felt embarrassed by the phoney pictures. Tiger Woods is a massive celebrity, and as such, his life is scrutinised beyond what kind of golf clubs he uses � and the Ryder Cup is one of the biggest tournaments in the world.

Unacceptable

The unwanted publicity prompted Woods to make a statement to the press.

�It's unacceptable and I don't want it to detract from this event,� he said in a news conference at the Ryder Cup before picking up his golf clubs to play. �It's hard to be diplomatic. Elin's an extension of me. We do things together; I care about her with all my heart.�

Woods criticised the media for being difficult and not letting the facts get in the way of a good story. Concerns were raised at the K Golf Club if the incident would affect his play in the Ryder Cup. He was so upset by the false slur on his wife; he was considering legal action against the publications in question.

Apology

The Dubliner later apologised for the article, saying it was written as a satirical piece and not meant to damage the personal integrity of any Ryder Club players or affect the performance with their golf clubs during the competition.

�We wish to sincerely apologise to Tiger Woods, his wife Elin Nordegren and other Ryder Cup players and their families for any offence they may have taken to it,� the paper wrote.

Elin Nordegren

Elin, a formerly virtually unknown swimsuit model and nanny from Sweden , became an overnight celebrity after news of her relationship with golfing superstar Tiger Woods broke out in 2002. The Swede met Tiger Woods when she was working as a nanny for golfer Jesper Parnevik and he introduced her to Woods. She married Woods in 2004.
