Golf Clubs � Ryder Cup � Europe Breaks Records

Europe swung their golf clubs into history as they beat the US in the 2006 Ryder Cup � the third win in a row.

Hat-trick

For the first time in history, Europe won the Ryder Cup three times in a row amid dramatic scenes of emotion as hundreds of fans poured onto the fairway to witness Darren Clarke be victorious with his golf clubs - just six weeks after losing his wife to cancer.

As well as the emotional impact of the European team swinging their golf clubs to victory at the Ryder Cup, it was felt the team captain Ian Woosnam would go down in history as one of the greatest and inspiring leaders Europe has ever had.

Record breaking

Another inspirational player, Colin Montgomerie kept his name in the history books by swinging his golf clubs to a final hole win, holding on to his record in eight Ryder Cup singles matches.

Previous Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer led Europe to a record breaking 18½ points to 9½ win in Detroit , and Ian Woosnam inspired his team to fly with their golf clubs and achieve the exact same score.

Dream come true

�Eighteen months ago, when they asked me to be captain, any victory would have been fantastic,� Woosnam told the BBC. �To walk away with the same record as Langer is unbelievable. It is a dream come true for me. I have won a Major tournament, I've been Number One in the world, but I've got to say, this is the proudest moment of my life.�

Europe 's strength

Although the American team boasted the top three golf players in the world, including the number one player who can do no wrong with his golf clubs, Tiger Woods, Europe had the best team ever assembled for the Ryder Cup.

Woosnam told the press: �I had 12 heroes today, 12 great players. They all played their part.�

The European team were so good that US Captain Tom Lehman was blown away.

�They played very inspired golf and around the greens they were magical. I've always felt in the past that they putt well and they chip well in every Ryder Cup. But this was something truly exceptional,� Lehman told the press.

It was felt all-round that their golf clubs were truly magical at the 2006 Ryder Cup, and that Europe had the strength and depth to take their winning roll forward to the next tournament in two years in Kentucky .
