Golf Clubs – Left Hand Golf Clubs – Successful Players

Golf Clubs Left Hand Golf Clubs Successful Players

Successful players who use left hand golf clubs are rare but there are a handful of famous left handed golfers.

Left hand golf clubs

Three golfers who play with left hand golf clubs have won Major Championships, which is a pretty low number. Perhaps the reason for this is a culture that has traditionally promoted right-handed equipment, instruction and play. Until recently, it hasn't been easy to access left hand golf clubs, and as a result, many left handed people had to learn to play with their right.

Famous left hand golfers

But three famous golfers do play with left hand golf clubs New Zealand 's Bob Charles, who won the 1963 British Open, Canadian Mike Weir who won the 2003 US Masters and Phi Mickelson at the 2004 Masters.

Bob Charles

Bob Charles is considered to be the finest golf player New Zealand ever produced and is famed for his left hand golf clubs. He was born in the small town of Carterton in 1936. The son of talented golfers, he took up rugby and cricket and didn't play in his first competition till he was 16. Remarkably, without any professional lessons, he swung his left hand golf clubs to victory and won the New Zealand Open when he was just 18. And in 1963, he picked up his left hand golf clubs once again to win the prestigious British Open. Charles continued to play and win throughout the 1970's, his last victory was the 1983 Tallahassee Open. Charles has since made training videos to help left handed players learn how to swing their left hand golf clubs.

Mike Weir

Mike Weir was one of a record four golfers who played with left hand golf clubs in the 2005 US Masters. Weir is the first Canadian ever to win a professional major championship and he became only the second player who uses left hand golf clubs to win any of the four majors when he won The 2003 Masters. The first left handed golfer to win was Bob Charles at the British Open, 40 years earlier. Mike Weir is in fact right handed, but plays with left hand golf clubs similar to Phil Mickelson.

Weir is a major success in the golfing world and The Mike Weir Foundation helps millions of children who benefit from the Children's Miracle Network of hospitals in Canada . For a time in 2003 and 2004 he was in the top ten in PGA Tour player rankings and in the top 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Phil Mickelson

The American Phil Mickelson was a born golfer. When he was just three years old he attempted to run away from home after not being allowed to play golf with his father.

His drive took him on a phenomenal junior career. Like Mike Weir, Mickelson is right handed but chooses to play with left hand golf clubs. The height of his career so far was winning the US Masters in 2004.
