Golf Clubs – Left Hand Golf Clubs – Should you play left?

Golf Clubs Left Hand Golf Clubs Should you play left?

Is swinging left hand golf clubs or right hand golf clubs the best? What do the pros think?

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods learned to play left-handed, not because he owned left hand golf clubs but because he was copying his dad.

My very first golf swing was left-handed, he wrote in Golf Digest magazine. As a little kid, I was trying to copy my dad's swing, only I saw him as a mirror image. As you can see from the photos of Phil Mickelson and me hitting each other's clubs on the 17th hole during a practice round at last year's Players Championship, I'm not a bad switch-hitter.

Phil Mickelson is of course well known for playing the game with left hand golf clubs, even though he is right handed. It is widely believed ambidexterity can help golfers. Practicing swinging left hand golf clubs can help improve your tempo.

Mike Weir

Mike Weir is a genuine left hander who plays with left handed golf clubs. Weir never suffered from a shortage of left hand golf clubs growing up in Canada because bizarrely, Canada has more left-handed golfers than anywhere else. As a result, despite the fact many players in other countries found it difficult finding good left hand golf clubs; they were readily available in Canada .

I played a set of Wilson Staff blades until my first year at BYU, Weir told Golf Digest magazine. In fact, I still have them in my basement. Now, though, there are enough good companies making enough good equipment that I don't think being left-handed limits my ability to find the best woods, irons and putters.

Is left best?

The stigma of playing with left hand golf clubs has now gone thanks to the success of Mickelson, Weir and Flesch, and it is generally felt if a learner leans towards playing left handed golf clubs, they shouldn't be forced to play right.

But some coaches think even left-handers should still play with their right. Some simply believe playing to the right is smoother. Johnny Miller believes left handed people playing golf with right hand not left hand golf clubs are even at an advantage.

Johnny Miller

First of all, the left-hander's strong side will be leading the swing when he plays righty, Miller wrote in the Golf Digest magazine. That's a big advantage. There's also the equipment issue. It's fairly easy to find good left-handed clubs now, but there still are more options for right-handers. Instruction-wise, it's easier to read about the golf swing and take lessons from pros whose teaching eyes are accustomed to looking at right-handers.
