�When I was a child just starting school, they tried to force me to become right-handed,� President of the society, Bernard Edwin Sands said. �The first thing the teacher did was take a ruler and beat the inside of my left wrist. It didn't work... I was still left-handed. Then, the school, for two years, tied my left hand behind my back until I stuttered so badly I could not speak.�

Suppressing skills

This reason stuttering and dyslexia is common in left handed people is because the world is designed against them so that they can not use the dominant side of their brain. Many left handed golfers had to learn to play right handed simply because left hand golf clubs were not widely available. This can only leave them at a disadvantage, which goes some way in explaining why so few golfing pros use left hand golf clubs � even though sports such as tennis, cricket and boxing have an unusually high percentage of left handed champions.

Re-adjusting the balance

Organisations like the Left Handed Liberation Society aim to try and re-address the inequalities by encouraging days that celebrate left handed people and golfers who play with left hand golf clubs - such as Left-Hander's Day on August 13.

Education

The society aims to educate the right handed population that being left handed or playing with left hand golf clubs can be a challenge � but it can also be a brilliant and alternative challenge to being right-handed. For left handed people the right side of the brain is dominant � and the right brain is for artistic endeavour � which is why great artists such as Vincent Van Gogh were lefties.
