She is one of golf's leading ladies, so how did Amy Alcott first get into golf and when did she first pick up a set of junior golf clubs?

At the age of eight Amy Alcott tried out her golf swing with a set of junior golf clubs and began her first steps to a successful career in the game.

Salvation

It's well documented that golf can help adults find peace and harmony. It is a sport that movie stars and celebrities love, and some have even said it gave them a sense of inner calm. However, golf for kids should be fun, right? Swinging junior golf clubs on a Saturday is a way for families to hang out and enjoy time together. But for Amy Alcott, golf was more than just having fun � it was her salvation.

Sawn off golf clubs

She told Golf Digest magazine: �I was a tomboy, I was kidded. The boys liked me well enough - I could run as fast as most of them. But the girls didn't understand my gift. I ended up a loner. Golf became my trusted companion, my best friend. I'd come home from elementary school to chip and putt.�

Alcott didn't even have proper professional junior golf clubs � but practiced with sawn off golf clubs and soup cans. One of three children growing up in Santa Monica , swinging these golf clubs was her way out of loneliness.

Junior golf clubs

Golf wasn't necessarily an obvious game for a girl to pick � tennis was more appealing to most than swinging junior golf clubs � but Amy saw it on TV and it intrigued her. �Visually, it just fascinated me,� she told Golf Digest.

Her father finally bought her a few junior golf clubs when she expressed an interest and when she grew tired of putting around the yard she built her own make-do golf course with her father. He built holes with tin cups, sand bunkers and installed a net when she kept breaking windows.

Junior membership

As a junior, she wasn't old enough to get into the golf clubs so began to lie about her age to get into public courses. Finally, aged 13 she got junior membership and a set of junior golf clubs and started training in earnest.

From amateur to pro

Amy entered the Californian junior tournaments and swung her junior golf clubs to victory at the California State Amateur and USGA Junior. By the age of 18, Amy's obsession with her golf clubs took her from being a junior player to a pro.

Inspiration

Sadly, as her career ascended her father's life was on the descent � she became estranged from him when he split up from her mother and took up gambling. He spent his last days though following Amy around the tournaments on tour. They made up just before he died aged 61. In just 24 years, Amy won all the modern majors and is now a legend in her own right and an inspiration to any young girl who is thinking of picking up a set of junior golf clubs
