Golf clubs – History uncovered

Golf Clubs History Will Remember Tom Morris

Tom Morris began his career making golf clubs and became a remarkable pioneer in the history of golf.

Tragic History

The story of Old Tom Morris is a famous one in golfing circles not just for his professional involvement and pioneering work in Scotland's golf clubs, but for his tragic personal story. His son, also a golfing hero died at the young age of 24 on Christmas Day, 1875.

Old Tom Morris

Tom Morris was born in St Andrews , the spiritual home of golf, in 1821 and began his history with the game making golf balls and golf clubs.

Tom went on to be a Keeper of the Greens at Prestwick Golf Club and used his knowledge of the game and golf clubs to make history and win the Open Championship three consecutive times from 1861 to 1864.

Link with history

As a golfing professional he went back to St Andrews and maintained the links. He also set up a business making golf clubs remarkably, the company is still going in St Andrews today and provides a valuable link to history

Old Tom remained ahead of his game, and in 1867 he picked up his golf clubs once more to win the Open for the fourth time at the age of 46 the oldest winner in the history of the Championship.

Runner up

In 1869, his son Young Tom kept the family history alive when he picked up his golf clubs to conquer his father in the Open Championship.

Young Tom deserves his place in the history books as much as his father he used his talent with his golf clubs to go on and win the title four consecutive times before his tragic, early death at the age of 24.

Young gun

Young Tom first used his golf clubs as a professional at the age of 13 and made history by becoming the youngest player ever to compete in the Open to this day at the age of 14.

Broken heart

He died it was rumoured of a broken heart on Christmas Day just a few months after his wife died in chid birth. Old Tom was also heartbroken at the untimely death of his son. But Old Tom went on to secure his place in history as he put down his golf clubs to become a respected course architect. At the age of 83, he retired in 1904 and died four days later after falling down a staircase.
