Golf clubs – History of Ireland and The Ryder Cup
Golf clubs History of Ireland and The Ryder Cup
Ireland hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006, reminding the world of the golfing heritage and history in the Emerald Isle, which boasts some of the finest golf clubs.
Rich history
When the British and Americans packed their golf clubs and set off for Ireland for the Ryder Cup in 2006, it reinforced the fact the Emerald Isle has a rich history of the game. Only Englishman Nick Faldo has out-swung his golf clubs and played more Ryder Cup matches than the legendary Irish player Christy O'Connor.
The Ryder Cup
40,000 fans flocked daily to the K Club in County Kildare , Ireland to watch the 2006 Ryder Club. We've made this the greatest week in history, said the 2006 Europe captain Ian Woosnam at the most famous of Ireland 's golf clubs.
Europe battled it out in front of a 400 million TV viewers world-wide and beat America but it wasn't jut about who won, it was a chance to watch the best golfers swing their golf clubs on some of the best courses in the games' history.
History of the Cup
The Ryder Cup is the most regarded international team tournament and Irish players have played a huge role in its history, which is why it was fitting the country hosted the 2006 event at an Irish golf club.
The history of the Ryder Cup began with Samuel Ryder in 1927 a keen golfer he came up with the idea of pitching Britain 's golf clubs against America 's after seeing players from different sides of the Atlantic standing apart from each other at a pre-Open qualifying tournament. The first matches were staged in America , originally hosted in Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts ; it is now one of the biggest tournaments in golf history. Only twice has it been cancelled once during World War Two and than in 2001 after the terrorist attacks of September 11.
400 Golf Clubs
Ireland is home to 400 golf clubs set in breathtaking landscapes and the links courses attract legends from golfing history including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo.
The K Club
The Ryder Cup was hosted at The K Club, chosen because of its two championship courses at the heart of Kildare countryside. The K Club joins the other golf clubs that have gone down in history for hosting the prestigious tournament. The club was already renowned for its courses, designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer and regarded as the country's most challenging.
