Golf Clubs – History and the Welsh
Golf Clubs History is Made by Swede
It seems every time this Swede picks up her golf clubs she makes history Annika Sorenstam goes from strength to strength.
A Star is Born
Born in 1970, the Swedish-born Annika Sorenstam instantly entered the history books for being the most successful female ever to pick up a set of golf clubs. She has won so far 69 official LPGA tournaments, including ten majors. Annika also made history by topping the LPGA's career money list for earnings over 20 million dollars not a bad return on a set of golf clubs!
Sportswoman of the Year
Sorenstam made sporting history after using her golf clubs to acquire seven worldwide victories, earning her the title World Sportswoman of the Year at the Laureus Sports Awards in 2004.
Record Breaking
And it seems Swedish-born Annika Sorenstam just keeps on making history and not just by breaking records with her golf clubs. She created a huge controversy when she accepted an invitation to play in the Bank of America Colonial tournament on the men's US tour and became the first American woman to do so in 58 years. Considering the pressure she was under, the appearance earned her respect and acclaim. The Swede is only one of six players to have won a career Grand Slam.
World Golf Hall of Fame
Her place in golfing history is assured by the skilful use of her golf clubs in 2003, which helped her team win the Solheim Cup from America and the resulting success saw Annika being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Magic Golf clubs
And the awards keep coming for this Swede with the magic golf clubs - she broke yet another record when she became the first woman in history to win the Golf Writers' Trophy twice. The Trophy rewards European golfers who have made the most outstanding contribution to the game in the preceding 12 months.
Winning her second trophy in 2005 climaxed the end of a remarkable season where she won 11 of the 21 tournaments she had entered, including three major championships.
Place in History Assured
On top of the awards, Sorenstam has made history by holding various all-time scoring records, including skilfully using her golf clubs in 2001to achieve the lowest score in a single round (59).
The Swede didn't pick up her golf clubs until the age of 12 and immediately began a successful amateur career before turning pro in 1993 and confidently stepping into sport's history books.
