Golf Clubs – History in the Making

Golf Clubs History in the Making

Two of the greatest men in history ever to pick up a set of golf clubs are Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus but who is the greatest?

The Golden Bear

Many believe Jack Nicklaus to be the greatest sports hero ever to pick up a set of golf clubs - in fact, the finest golfer in history no less. But, watch out Jack, Tiger Woods looks as if he could be a contender.

Jack Nicklaus has taken his golf clubs to victory in an astonishing 18 major golf championships more titles than any other golfer in history. Born in 1940 in Ohio , America his nickname became The Golden Bear. His impact on the history of the sport was evident from early on when he first picked up a set of golf clubs at the age of 12. By the time he reached University, he won the US Amateur title twice before turning professional in 1962.

Champion of the world

Many consider Nicklaus the greatest player in history ever to pick up a set of golf clubs. He is credited for helping turn the game into a major TV sport and is still influencing the history of the game as he now runs the largest golf design company Nicklaus Design - in the world. Even in his mid-sixties, Nicklaus hasn't hung up his golf clubs or stopped making golfing history.

If anyone was in any doubt of Nicklaus being the number one player to ever pick up a set of golf clubs in the history of the game so far the fact that in 2005 the Royal Bank of Scotland printed special edition five pound notes featuring his face should say it all.

Tiger Tactics

Despite this, Tiger Woods is fast encroaching on Jack's legendary ability with his golf clubs and Woods could end up overtaking Nicklaus in the history books.

Born in 1975, the Californian was nicknamed Tiger after a Vietnamese soldier and friend of his father. Like Nicklaus Tiger was courting golf history at a young age he would watch his father pick up his golf clubs and imitate his swing at the tender age of six months. He putted golf balls with Bob Hope aged 2, perhaps setting the young golfer up for greatness and already seeing him step into the history books before he could barely lift his golf clubs.

Tiger Bites Back

Woods has won almost a quarter of all the PGA tour events he has entered. And although he still has some way to the 18 professional majors won by Nicklaus, Woods did beat Nicklaus's record he won his 11 events by the time he was 30, whereas it took Nicklaus till the age of 32. So could he supersede The Golden Bear in the history books as the greatest sportsman ever to pick up a set of golf clubs? Only time will tell.
