Golf clubs – History at the turn of the 20 th Century

Golf clubs History at the turn of the 20 th Century

The turn of the 20 th century was a significant period in golfing history with the technological advances of golf clubs and balls.

Golf history goes back centuries, as far back as the 1400s even in America 's more recent history, the game has a place in the history books in 1743 the first recorded shipment of golf clubs to the States was logged.

Today the game is as vital as ever and Tiger Woods it seems is literally writing golf history every time he swings his golf clubs. So what were the memorable moments of the 1900s?

America makes its mark

At the turn of the century, American golfer Harry Vardon put the United States on the golfing map. The game clearly belonged to the British, as golf is widely thought to have originated in Scotland . But American golfing history was made when Vardon, a six-time British Open champion, toured the US and won the American Open in 1900.

Technology advances

The turn of the twentieth-century was significant in golfing history, thanks to the industrial revolution which saw huge design improvements in golf clubs and golf balls. The gutty ball was replaced with a rubber-core ball, encased in gutta-percha. This added on average 25 yards to the drives of golf clubs. Golfing history began the technological improvements that are so central to the modern game.

New balls

From the American Haskell ball, further developments saw a core completely made up of wound rubber thread gradually the core became larger. Alongside developments in golf clubs, another American, E Kempshall , made a dramatic improvement for the history of the game by replacing the solid core with a liquid core The Kempshall Flyer is still the basis of the modern golf ball.

Golf clubs make history

It's hard not to over estimate the influence in the advances in industrial technology on the game during this period in history high quality iron and steel for golf clubs and lawn mowers for example. The next step in the history of the game was the establishment of golf clubs where rules were adopted and the golf clubs began to host challenges and matches with other clubs.

Golf media begins

By 1908 in America , the American Golfer magazine was launched this classy title can be seen as the start of what is now a deluge of specialist golfing magazines that have accumulated over history, examining everything from golf clubs, the perfect golf swing and profiling golfing personalities.

World wars

In Britain , golf clubs survived some momentous moments in history including two world wars.

For example, the East Course at North Berwick which dated back to 1894. By 1906, the Burgh Golf Club was established on the course during WW2, the course was commandeered by the Ministry of Agriculture for food production. But once peace returned, it was restored and reopened in 1949. Not even world wars could assign the game of golf to history.
