Golf Club's History and Prince William
Golf Club's History and Prince William
When Prince William went to university at St Andrews it wasn't just sportsmen with golf clubs attracted to the town steeped in golfing history.
Media pull
When it was announced Prince William was going to attend St Andrews University in Scotland , the town became more of a media attraction than a golfing one. There's no doubt that the young Prince has added to the town's already rich history known for its famous golf clubs.
Despite the temptation of having a member of the British Royalty in the town, the world's media resisted stalking the Prince after an agreement was reached to leave the young princes alone until they reached adulthood after the death of their mother, Princess Diana. To keep the media in control, regular press interviews were granted, such as the one Prince William gave to the Press Association in 2003 mid-way his four year degree course. The Prince was photographed swinging his golf clubs at the town's driving range a perfect photo opportunity tapping into the town's rich history of the game.
Tourist Temptation
Although St Andrews is known for its golfing history, during the four years the Prince was studying, tourists were more likely to be hunting for glimpses of royalty than packing their golf clubs.
I think it's probably a little harder for tourists and foreigners who come up here to try to pretend, as it were, that they haven't seen me, the Prince told the Press Association. I hope I'm not a tourist attraction I'm sure that they come here really because St Andrews is just amazing, a beautiful place.
And of course because of its history of golf it has the oldest golf clubs in the world.
University life
For the young Prince, the town offered a great balance of fun and space: I like cinemas, bars, restaurants and lots of sport on the beach, playing quick golf; just making use of everything up here, the Prince said.
Swinging his golf clubs
When William was not studying, his great passion was sport although golf was not at the top of his list - he was water-polo captain for the university. But he does take his golf clubs up to the driving range to practice his swing no doubt another page in the history books of the town and its association with the game. Not that the town needs its reputation for the game of golf boosting it is seeped in the history of the game and everyone who is anyone has swung their golf clubs in St Andrews.
Scottish history
And of course Scottish history and culture has more to offer than swinging golf clubs: I love Scottish dancing it's great, Prince William told the Press Association. I'm hopeless at it but I do enjoy it. I usually make a complete muck-up of the Dashing White Sergeant, I do throw my arms dangerously about and girls fly across the dance floor, he laughed.
