Golf towel – golf equipment and accessories – taking care of the ball
Golf towel golf equipment and accessories taking care of the ball
The golf towel is a necessary piece of equipment and accessories if you want to keep your ball clean in play
The dimpled ball
An appendix to the Rules of Golf defines that a golf ball must not weigh more than 45.93 grammes, that its diameter must not be less than 42.67 mm, and that its shape may not differ significantly from a symmetric sphere. The modern golf ball consists of rubber thread wound around a rubber core and coated with dimpled enamel. The dimples are arranged in rows. The number of dimples is either 336 for an American ball or 330 for a British ball. The typical drive with a modern golf ball is about 180 to 250 yards. The dimples on the ball assist with aerodynamics, but conversely provide a better surface for dirt and debris to stick to than a flat surface. This is where the golf towel proves an invaluable piece of golfing equipment and should always be included with your accessories.
Hazards
It is good to keep in mind that there are two types of hazards on a golf course. These are water hazards, such as rivers, lakes. The other hazards are bunkers. There are special rules that apply in playing when the balls come to rest in a hazard. For instance, the player cannot touch the ground with his club before playing a ball. If the ball cannot be played from the hazard, the player can remove it by hand and clean it with a golf towel taken from his or her equipment and accessories, and put it outside the hazard within two club lengths from its position in the hazard, but this brings on a penalty of one stroke. If the ball can not be found in the hazard it has to be replaced by dropping another one outside the hazard.
Maintaining the green
The care and feeding of a golf course's greens (how they are mowed, watered and fertilized) can have a major impact on green speed, which in turn affects a player's golf handicap, especially if he or she plays the same golf course a lot. The term green speed doesn't actually refer to how fast your golf ball rolls, but the distance that it rolls. Probably the most frequent request about greens is to increase the speed. Clearly you can't influence the state of the greens other than by talking to the golf club or those who are responsible for maintaining the course, but you can increase your distance by making sure that your golf ball is in the best possible condition by taking along a clean towel as part of your equipment and accessories.
