Golf tees – golf equipment and accessories – history of the tee

Golf tees golf equipment and accessories teeing ground

The teeing ground is where you place your golf tees (as part of your golf equipment and accessories) to play the hole

Teeing Ground

The first stroke on each hole is taken from the Tee (officially, teeing ground ), where the player can use a tee (a small wooden or plastic peg carried as part of the golf equipment and accessories), which makes the tee shot easier. The teeing ground is the area at the beginning of a hole from which the player's first stroke is taken. When referring to the area, the terms "tee" and "teeing ground" are often used interchangeably.

Tee boxes

Most golf courses offer a range of tee boxes to play from, making the hole longer or shorter depending on which tees the player starts at. Often, the different tee boxes have names associated with degree of competence, or by sex and age. In addition to a difference in distance, the different golf tees may also eliminate or reduce the danger of some hazards for the "Forward" tees, such as water hazards, so choosing the correct golf equipment and accessories can benefit your game. Teeing grounds on most golf courses are relatively flat, in order for the golfer to have a perfect lie for the first shot on a hole.

Three sets of tees

At a course with three sets of tees, the guidelines for choosing the correct set are pretty easy: the championship tees (back tees) are for low-handicap men. The middle tees are for middle to high handicap men, low-handicap or long-hitting women, and low-handicap or long-hitting senior men. The forward tees are for middle or high handicap women and seniors, and beginners. A player may stand outside the teeing ground to play a ball within it. In teeing, if a player uses a non-conforming golf tee as part of his or her golf equipment and accessories, or any other object to raise the ball off the ground, he or she will be disqualified .

Tee markers

The boundaries of the teeing ground are defined by a pair of tee markers. The front, left and right sides of the tee are denoted by the outer edges of the tee markers, assuming the perspective of a player standing in the teeing ground and facing the hole. The teeing ground is two club-lengths in depth. Most courses have at least three sets of tee markers (some may have six or more), each a different colour and denoting different yardages. This makes it clear where you should place your golf tees when you employ your golf equipment and accessories on the teeing ground.
