Men's Golf Shoes at The Masters
Men's Golf Shoes at The Masters
Men's golf shoes have always had a problem with metal spikes, as evidenced at the 2005 Masters.
Men's golf shoes kafuffle
At the 2005 Masters, Vijay Singh got into a kafuffle with fellow pro Phil Mickelson over the kind of men's golf shoes he was wearing. A spat over spike marks saw the two have a heated discussion' about the golf shoes the men were wearing.
Metal spikes
Traditionally, men's golf shoes had big metal spikes. The first golf shoes were described as miniature torture chambers.' Originally, men's golf shoes were heavy leather boots with thick nails to give players grip on the marshy, wet British courses. But nasty accidents did happen with these old-style shoes such as nails protruding through the thin leather soles. And of course, these men's golf shoes damaged the green.
Advances in technology
Thanks to advances in textiles and technology, men's golf shoes are more user friendly for the golf course and for the player. Outsole and plastic-cleat features have replaced the cumbersome and destructive metal spikes.
Masters Tour Controversy
But metal spikes on men's golf shoes are still used by some professional players. This was evident on the 2005 when Phil Mickelson's golf shoes caused problems for Vijay Singh. The two golfers had a spat over the kind of men's golf shoes used when spike marks were spotted during the Masters.
A spokesman for the tournament told the press that Vijay had made a complaint and as a result a referee was called to inspect Mickelson's golf shoes to take off any burrs.
Golf shoes check
Phil Mickelson was approached by an official at the 13 th tee to check the golf shoes he was wearing, which led to a heated discussion between Mickelson and Vijay.
He expressed his concerns. I expressed my disappointment with the way it was handled, Mickelson said through his press agent, T.R. Reinman. I believe everything is fine now.
Spikes in men's golf shoes
However, the dispute over the style of men's golf shoes worn and their metal spikes put Mickelson off his game. He said he was angry about the timing of being stopped by an official to look at his golf shoes.
I was extremely distracted and would have appreciated if it would have been handled differently or after the round. Mickelson said. He went on to say that over a third of the field wore metal spikes on their men's golf shoes in the wet conditions.
