Golf Clubs Golf Irons A Guide For Purchasing Irons
If you want to learn more about golf irons, read below for some tips.
If you're just starting out your golfing career, it can be extremely difficult to get your head around golf irons, and which golf iron you should use for which shot. Faced with several golf clubs to choose from, it can be a very daunting process knowing which golf iron is the right one to use which is why we've devised a beginner's guide below.
The reason why a golf club is called a golf iron is due to its clubhead being made of metal. Irons feature thin clubheads and grooved faces, and a beginner golf player should opt for a cavity back style. This is because the weighting of a cavity back golf iron allows for a larger sweet spot, which provides assistance on mis-hits. The cavity back style of iron is often referred to as a game improvement club and is good for golf players with high handicaps.
A normal set of golf irons will contain 8 golf clubs in it and will include a 3-iron thorough pitching wedge. Each iron will be slightly shorter than the next, starting with the 3-iron which is the longest, through to the 8-iron. The clubs can be identified by the number which is written on the sole of each club. The longer your iron, the further you should be able to hit the ball, for example, a 3-iron club should produce a shot which is approximately 10-15 yards longer than a 4-iron shot. As you work your way through to the higher numbered, smaller irons, you should also notice a change in the angle of your shot. For example, a shot with an 8 iron should rise and fall at a much steeper angle than a 3-iron.
There are also 1-irons and 2-irons available to purchase, but as a beginner, its not advisable to purchase these types of golf clubs. The technicalities of these clubs are much harder to master and unsuitable for a beginner, in fact, some people would recommend that beginners avoid buying 3 and 4-irons and instead, replace them with utility or fairway woods golf clubs.
Irons are generally categorized as long irons, mid-irons and short irons. Long irons are the 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-irons; mid-irons, the 5-, 6- and 7-irons; short irons, the 8- and 9-irons and pitching wedge. You will find the shorter irons the easiest to hit as their shaft is shorter, making it easier to control your swing. Shorter irons also have an increase in loft which helps the ball to become airborne.
Irons are often played when performing a tee shot as they provide better control over the shot. However, the majority of your iron shots will come from the fairway. Irons are designed to handle divots which is why they have a leading edge that is sharply rounded. "Divot" refers to both the turf that is scraped up, and the scarred area in the fairway where the turf has been.
