Golf Clubs – Golf Drivers – Understanding The Terms

Golf Clubs Golf Drivers Understanding The Terms

If you want to learn some golf terminology and impress all your friends at the golf club, read below for the latest terminology relating to golf drivers.

Many people get confused when it comes to terminology in golf, in particular, the terminology behind golf clubs and golf drivers. Below is a list of the key terms which you should become familiar with if you're considering improving your golf drive on the course.

Headsize of Golf Drivers - The head size of a golf driver is the size of everything below the shaft. The headsize is measured in cubic centimetres and the legal limit for a golf driver is 460cc.

Launch Angle of Golf Drivers - The launch angle of a golf driver is the angle at which the ball is struck into the air from the driver. The launch angle is measured from the ground and most drivers will have an angle of between 11 and 18 degrees. Finding the right launch angle will produce the maximum amount of distance from your golf club swing. The perfect launch angle will maximise both carry and roll.

Golf Driver's COR The Coefficient of Restitution (COR) , is the measurement of the amount of energy transferred between the golf clubface and the golf ball at impact. Specifically, the COR measures how well the ball rebounds off the clubface. The higher the COR, the more energy is retained and the ball rebounds farther.

Weight of Golf Drivers - T he weight of a golf driver is very important. An average golf driver is between 43-47 inches in length. Increasing the length of your driver will increase your golf drive, but you will not have as much control of the ball and therefore it is recommended that only experienced players use golf clubs with the increased length.

The latest breakthrough in driver technology is the incorporation of weights in the head of drivers. The further the weight is away from the face, the higher the ball flight will be. In more recent years, companies have begun adding removable weights. Usually, up to four weights can be placed in the head of drivers to offer players different shapes and velocities.

Length of Golf Drivers - The physics behind increasing the length of your golf driver is that the clubhead has further to travel to the ball, therefore picking up speed for longer. Similarly the lighter the golf driver, the faster the player's swing speed will be, producing more distance. If you desire more control on your golf drives a heavier driver will offer more control.
