Golf Clubs – Golf Drivers Stick to the Rules
Golf Clubs Golf Drivers Stick to the Rules
How can golf retain skill and a level playing field when golf clubs and golf drivers are becoming more and more high tech?
Governing bodies
The game of golf is forever evolving thanks to new technology, but how does the game stay fair if there are players who can purchase expensive, new fangled golf clubs and golf drivers that will drastically improve their game?
This is where the Royal & Ancient Committee and US Golf Association step in. They formulate technical specifications for golfing equipment and decide on the rules of the game for Europe and America respectively.
New balls please
These two governing bodies recently set out a new set of rules for golf clubs and golf drivers to stop advances in technology ruining the game and keeping its competitive edge.
Restrictions
If anything the two associations have been busy imposing restrictions on golf clubs and balls recent proposals placed a limit on the moment of inertia in golf drivers. This is called MOI moment of inertia. The higher the MOI number, the less twisting of the golf clubs occurs. Limiting MOI means the golfers swinging their golf clubs need skill and the challenge of the sport is upheld.
Balance
The aim is to gain a balance in the golf clubs and golf drivers between skill and technology. Some manufacturers looking to increase profit margins feel the governing bodies can be too strict on game-improvement technology that creates more accurate, stronger and efficient golf clubs and golf drivers. Some believe the law of physics and gravity means that despite the technology, swinging golf clubs and golf drivers will always be a challenge.
Rules are rules
Golf has always been a game of rules and etiquette. But despite the fact technology has changed golf clubs and golf drivers, the fact remains the average handicap of amateur golfers has hardly moved in decades. On average men are around 15 points and women, 28.
Golf Drivers the rules
- In the 1990s, the USGA caused a stir when they imposed a limit on the spring-effect of golf drivers. A ratio of .830 for the clubface was agreed.
- The size of golf drivers is limited to 460 cubic centimeters and the length of the shaft could be no more than 48 inches.
Level playing field
More rules for golf drivers have been introduced in recent years than ever before. Some believe this is holding the game back golfers want to improve, grow and increase expectations and technology can help. But for now, many players believe that having the same courses and same types of golf clubs and golf drivers creates a level playing field that makes the game exciting for pros and amateurs alike.
