Golf clubs – Courses – The Names of St Andrews

Golf clubs Courses The Names of St Andrews

St Andrews now has a portfolio of seven golf courses of all the golf clubs in the world, it is the most ancient and prestigious.

The Links

The courses at the golf clubs in St Andrews are based at the Links - so when there was just one course, it was known simply as St Andrews Links. When in 1895, it expanded to two courses the naming of the Links began. The Victorians were known for their common sense and simply called the newest course the New and the oldest, the Old. Then in 1897 a third course was opened, originally designed for ladies to swing their golf clubs on. It was named the jubilee Course to mark the 60 th anniversary of Queen Victoria 's accession to the throne.

Eden Course

By 1914, there were four courses for golfers to swing their golf clubs on. The fourth, Eden Course, was built by HS Colt. The name was a nod to the Eden Estuary that was once central to the St Andrews economy.

Balgove Course

Sixty years later, a 9-hole course was designed. The Balgove Course took the number of courses up to five St Andrews was easily the most prestigious of golf clubs. Balgove was the name of the farm that the course was built on.

The Strath'

The Strathtyrum course is named from the estate it took land from. It was designed by Donald Steel in 1993. It's known by golfers as The Strath'.

Name that course

But now players will have a choice of another 18-hole course to swing their golf clubs on - The Links Trust is about to open another 18-hole course to join the other six courses. The name of the course is still a mystery as a competition was launched to find a name this year but by 2007 St Andrews will have another string to its bow.

The seventh course was built on land that was used as hunting ground for Pictish kings in the mid eighth century. The course's main feature will be the Kinkell Ness headland, where the course golf club house will be.

The land is full of Scottish history and mystery once the site of Kinkell Castle ; the shores feature Kinkell Cave , thought to have been used in the smuggling trade.

The seventh course in this prestigious golf clubs portfolio of courses was designed by one of the hottest golf designers working today, David McLay Kidd he just happens to be a Scot!

Who knows how many more courses the greatest golf club in the world will see?
