The city

St Andrews is an ancient city on the east coast of Scotland and has been a place of pilgrimage long before golfers trooped over to this most famous of golf clubs, with its ancient golf courses. Legend has it that in AD 390 a monk called Regulus brought the bones of St Andrew over from Greece . The city took his name and St Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland as the city grew in size and prestige.

University town

As well as having the most famous of all the golf clubs in the world, you can study a number of academic courses at St Andrews . It boasts the country's oldest university, founded in 1413, most recently attended by Prince William. But the town has had links with British royalty for centuries.

Golf mecca

The Scots have been swinging their golf clubs on its courses for centuries; when the university was founded in 1413 it was thought to be a popular sport, so much so that in 1457 King James II banned it. It was felt men were spending too much time swinging their golf clubs on the courses and neglecting archery practice � which was necessary for the country's defence.

Prestige

Alongside golfers, monarchs, ambassadors and bishops all visited the town, including Mary Queen of Scots. In 1754, golf clubs were being formed on courses throughout the British Isles , and the Society of St Andrews Golfers, later to become the Royal and Ancient Golf Club was formed.
