Golf Clubs –Courses in Scotland Rock

Golf Clubs Courses in Scotland Rock

Scotland may be a long, long way to travel but there's no doubt that for all golfers, this island has the best courses in the world.

Scotland is, it's agreed, the home of golf. Golf tourism attracts a huge amount of people world-wide to its famous golf clubs, courses and not so famous hidden gems. And you can take package tours or tailor-make your own trip around the country's golf clubs and courses.

Read all about it

If you're going to do it then you should read about it first. Vic Robbie's definitive book is a great guide if you plan to take in Scotland 's golf clubs and courses. Scotland Golf Courses: The Complete Guide has comprehensive information on over 500 golf clubs and courses and is a great travelling companion.

More than meets the eye

Of course, when you think of golf clubs and famous courses in Scotland , you think of St Andrews . But there is more to the country than this. For example, the Kingsbarns golf course is a fantastic place to swing your golf clubs. With dramatic sea views from each hole, the course has a golf heritage dating back to 1793. The fairways twist over dunes through heather and rough for over a mile along scenic coastline.

Golf tourism

Thousands visit the country every year to experience the golf clubs and courses of Scotland , with many making a pilgrimage to St Andrews , where the first ever game of golf was played in the fifteenth century.

Open Championship

As well as St Andrews , many golfers feel they haven't fully experienced golf courses until they've swung their golf clubs on Scottish soil. And there's no shortage of greens to try. Other Open Championship venues include Royal Troon, Carnoustie, Turnberry, Muirfield, Loch Lomond and Royal Dornach.

Carnousite Golf course

Golf courses like Carnousite are a good example of how extensive the sport is in the country. Carnousite hosted the Open Championship in 1999 and is renowned as one of the toughest links courses you could swing your golf clubs on in the world. Many believe it is a monster of a course all 7,361-yards of it. In the 1999 Open Championship, local hero Paul Lawrie from Aberdeen won with a winning score of 290, six over par. Here in America we are mostly lucky with the weather and get more than our share of sunshine, but when the wind blows on Scottish courses, it can be a major challenge.
