Golf clubs: Why not custom fit your golf clubs?
Golf clubs: Why not custom fit your golf clubs?
Whatever your ability, custom fitting your golf clubs can improve your game
When it comes to custom fitting, it is a fair analogy to say that golf clubs are like shoes. If your shoes don't fit, your feet will hurt; and if your golf clubs don't fit, your game will suffer. Golf clubs that are too short and flat, end up with the toe of the iron digging into the turf with a resulting loss in distance and a tendency to push things right. Wrong shaft flex and grip thickness can also complicate matters, while another important point to ponder is that there is no industry standard for lie and shaft length among manufacturers they all vary.
Industry surveys show that over 95% of golfers are playing with clubs that do not fit them. However, it makes absolute sense to get your golf clubs tailor-made to meet your physical attributes. Whether you are Tiger Woods or a high handicapper, you'll still need clubs suitable for your build and frame. Custom fitting is nothing to do with ability it's right for all abilities.
What's involved in custom fitting?
Essentially, you try lots of different shaft combinations using the technology available including flex, grip size, loft and lie, then set about hitting balls to find out which suits your game best.
To begin with, however, simple measurements such as wrist-to-floor, height and hand size are taken which will point you to the right sized club and at what angle it should be to the ground. Analysis equipment can measure everything from your club speed to the side spin of the ball so that you can get maximum distance from your shot. You can also measure the launch angle of the ball, how much backspin you generate and impact efficiency - all which affect distance.
What difference will it make?
Custom fitting won't cure all your bad shots. Coaching will sort that out. But if you do make a good swing, then the club will arrive correctly at impact and should produce a straight shot at your target.
How much does it cost?
Fitting is widespread in the US with most manufacturers having fitting sites across the country. Custom fitting will take approximately 30 minutes to do. It will cost you a little more than buying a standard set of clubs, but may save you money since you won't need to change the set as you'll have a set perfectly suited to you.
