Golf Clubs – Unusual Facts on the Game and the Players.

Golf Clubs Unusual Facts on the Game and the Players.

Impress your golf partners with some unusual facts on golf clubs, the game and the people who play it.

Fact File

  • St Andrews is one of the world's most famous golf clubs and the game has been linked to the area since 1400 AD.
  • King James II of Scotland actually banned golf in 1457, he felt all that swinging of golf clubs was distracting young men from archery practice.
  • Ever wondered why golf is called golf? The medieval Dutch word kolf' meant club' so perhaps we should really be calling golf clubs, kolf clubs'.
  • The word kolf' it is thought evolved when the Scottish dialect turned the word into golve'.

The history of golf is pretty expansive considering its spread over half a millennium.

So there are bound to be some bizarre events. How about the amateur golfer who beat the odds to score two holes in one during a single round? Or the inventor who played with golf clubs recycled from the metal from nuclear missiles? A tournament has been held up by flocks of crows, and one poor unsuspecting fan was caught out by the professionals swinging their golf clubs he was hit twice by errant balls.

The Bizarre

  • Singapore has a rather unusual golf green the fourth hole in the nine-hole Aranda course has its own traffic light. The fourth hole has a blind drive as a hill obscures the view, so players have to wait for the green light before they swing their golf clubs.
  • The longest game on record has to be that played by Floyd Rood who played from September 14 in 1963 to October 3 the following year. That's over a year of swinging his golf clubs! He played from the Pacific to the Atlantic in America and lost 3,511 balls on the 3,397.7 mile journey.
  • In the 1989 US Open in New York , four golfers holed the 167 yards 6 th hole in one. They beat the odds of 332,000 to 1.
