Golf clubs: How to be environmentally friendly
Golf clubs: How to be environmentally friendly
It's easy to be environmentally friendly at your golf club as well as at home
Golf clubs haven't always had a green image, but things are improving. Advances in technology and new methods employed by the greenkeepers mean that golf clubs are becoming more sustainable. Increasingly, we are becoming aware of the need to care for the environment and the importance of recycling and sustainability. We can all do our bit for the environment, whether we are at work or play, and the golf course is no exception. Below are some suggestions of ways that you can do your bit for the environment next time you visit the golf club:
- Walk the course instead of using a golf cart
- If you do use a golf cart, keep your cart on the designated path
- Urge your golf club to replace its carts with electric-powered ones, which greatly reduce both air pollution and noise pollution
- Support research and education programs that expand our understanding of the relationship between golf and the environment
- Accept the natural limitations and variations of turfgrass plants growing in a natural environment, brown patches, thinning and loss of color , for example
- Be willing to play on brown grass during periods of low rainfall
- Carry your trash with you until a waste container is available
- Recycle glass, aluminum, and plastic on the golf course
- Buy recyclable products (e.g., biodegradable golf tees)
- If your club doesn't have its own recycling program, urge them to start one
- Adhere to and respect local rules that may restrict access to environmentally sensitive areas on a golf course
- Patronize courses that are environmentally friendly
- Recognize that golf courses are managed land areas that should complement the natural environment
- Support golf course management decisions that protect or enhance the environment and encourage the development of environmental conservation plans
- Support maintenance practices that protect wildlife and natural habitat
- Encourage maintenance practices that promote the long-range health of the turf and support environmental objectives. Such practices include aerification, reduced fertilization, limited play on sensitive turf areas and reduced watering
- Commit to long-range conservation efforts, for example, efficient water use and integrated pest management, both on the golf course and at home
