Golf clubs: How to achieve the perfect swing
Golf clubs: How to achieve the perfect swing
There is more to the golfer's swing than meets the eye
As hard as a boxer's knock-out punch, the golf swing is about more than just power. The difference is control. The professionals learn how to control and maintain a technique which allows them to put 100% of their energy into connecting with the ball. Good golf is about accurate and controlled shots, so you don't have to be at 100% throughout the swing, just at impact.
There are six important things to remember when preparing your body to hit the ball:
- Aim As a general rule you should keep the golf club face square to the target
- Grip Extend your right hand out as if about to shake hands with someone and then place it on the handle below your left hand. Relax your elbows and shoulders but be firm in your hands but not tight
- The ball - For most medium range shots the ball should be in the middle of your stance. And as a general rule of thumb, longer shots such as drives and low irons are played nearer the front foot. Whereas the shorter clubs, such as wedges and high irons, are played nearer the back foot
- Stance - You should alter the distance between your feet, depending on what golf club you are about to use
- Body alignment - If you want to hit the target, you must be pointing in the right direction
- Posture - Your feet should be shoulder width apart to make it easy to shift your weight
Set up
One you have the above six points right, the main thing to remember is to keep your head steady. Your head should act as the inner circle around which your arms and shoulders turn. It is also important to visualize each shot before you swing.
Takeaway
The best swings start with a slow, smooth, 'one-piece' takeaway. This means moving your hands, arms, shoulders and hips at the same time in one connected movement as you begin to transfer your weight from your front foot to your back foot
Backswing
As the arms continue their journey back, concentrate on turning your shoulders. This will mean your left shoulder moves into the place where your right shoulder was at address. As the body continues to turn about your hips, the hinging action of the wrists will point the golf club head up towards the sky.
Impact
Focus on 3 things:
- Hitting down through the back of ball
- Rolling your right forearm over your left as you hit the ball
- Opening your shoulders on impact
If you slow your club head just a millisecond before impact you will not hit the ball anything like 100%
Follow-through
If your follow-through is right, you'll know you have a good swing. Visualise 'throwing' the club head towards the target and staying on that line for as long as possible. When you finish, your chest should be facing the target and the entire sole of your right foot should be visible.
