After overcoming polio he took up golf aged ten and won the first of six Ohio State Junior titles at the tender age of twelve. While still at University in Ohio , he won the US Amateur title twice and turned professional in 1962.
Champion of champions
Nicklaus is considered to be the ultimate champion of champions ever to pick up a set of golf clubs a major force in professional golf, he is credited with turning the game into a major spectator sport his rivalry with Arnold Palmer drove the game of golf into the arena of TV. Nicklaus currently holds the record of 18 wins in major tournaments, although Tiger Woods is quickly encroaching on Jack's legendary ability with his golf clubs Woods had won 12 major championship wins by the age of 30.
Woods and Nicklaus
The two champions Nicklaus and Woods - are the only golfers in history to have used their golf clubs to win all four majors more than once, and Nicklaus is the only champion to have won all four majors at least three times. His records don't stop there. At the age of 46 this champion was far from ready to hang up his golf clubs, he became the oldest player to ever win The Masters.
The Golden Bear is such a major force in sporting history that in 2005 The Royal Bank of Scotland printed two million special edition five pound notes with Nicklaus's image.
His success on the golf course is so influential that when he won the championship in the 1986 Masters using a Response ZT putter, the manufacturer received 5,000 orders for the golf clubs the next day.
Jack's back
Now in his mid-sixties, Nicklaus devotes his time to golf course design through his family-run company, Nicklaus Design.
