Golf Clothing – A Waterproof Suit Can Save Your Life

Golf Clothing A Waterproof Suit Can Save Your Life

If you are not wearing a waterproof suit or adequate golf clothing on the course and you get cold and wet, you could get into serious trouble.

Wet and cold

It is rare, but if you are on the golf course for hours on end in torrential cold and rain, you need to be mindful of frostbite and hypothermia. It may sound extreme, but if you don't wear appropriate golf clothing and a waterproof suit to protect you from the elements, you could be at risk. Frostbite and hypothermia are the most common cold weather related injuries.

What is hypothermia?

Prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to a too low body temperature which affects the brain and makes it difficult to think clearly or move quickly. The reason it is so dangerous is you will probably not know about it until it's too late. It's a mistake to think it is only in extremely cold places that you are vulnerable. If you become chilled from rain or sweat even at cool temperatures above 40°F you could become a victim, which is why it is vital you wear appropriate golf clothing and a waterproof suit.

Who is at risk?

The elderly are more at risk, so if you play golf in your retirement and you're not based in Florida , the Sunshine State , than you probably should ensure you own a waterproof suit and golf clothing that keeps you dry and warm.

Wear a waterproof suit

Epidemiological research suggests that even in what appears to be safe environmental conditions, hypothermia can happen. The temperature may be moderate and the sun shining, but as the sun sets and the temperature begins to drop, coupled with conditions of exhaustion, dehydration and wet clothing associated with physical activity, the risk of cold-related illness and even death can increase. Don't be blasé and think you don't need to bother with a waterproof suit or warm golf clothing.

Symptoms include:

  • Shivering
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Drowsiness

Mild hypothermia can be simply shivering, goose bumps and numb hands but at the extreme, it can render you unconscious. Severe hypothermia demands immediate medical attention. Prevention includes:

  • Dress in layers.
  • Cover the head to prevent excessive heat loss from the head and neck.
  • Stay dry on the golf course by wearing appropriate clothing, such as a waterproof suit.
  • Stay adequately hydrated.
  • Eat regular meals.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.
